Commencement Information

Arrival time for commencement

Doors for the commencement ceremony will open at 12:30 p.m. for Graduates only. Students are expected to arrive no later than 1:00 p.m. in order to ensure there is enough time for robing and organization.

Family members and guests should expect to arrive between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Please note that we will not be able to admit guests or family members prior to 1pm, we ask that you plan accordingly.

The ceremony itself will begin promptly at 2:00 p.m.

What happens if I am late?

We strongly encourage graduates to plan ahead so that they can arrive early on the afternoon of the ceremony. NECB will have volunteers working the ceremony to ensure that the day is a success for you and your family members. Any late student will receive their cap & gown and be seated by degree grouping with fellow students. Ushers will assist guests to their seats.

Caps, gowns and attire

Caps and gowns (as well as tassels and honor cords) will be distributed before the ceremony by staff members of the college. Graduate-level students (MBA, MSF, MBEC, MHM, MHRM, MSQSM) will also receive a graduate hood.

Graduates are encouraged to dress appropriately for this recognition event, which includes family and friends. Graduates should not wear shorts, t-shirts or flip-flops. However, graduates can expect to be on their feet for some time, so appropriate footwear with at least a moderate level of comfort is suggested.

Please note that there will not be space available for students to store personal items during the ceremony. Personal items may include (but are not limited to): purses, backpacks, jackets or hats.

Please arrange to leave all personal items with a guest or family member ahead of time.

Name Cards

Along with regalia, graduates in the robing area will be given an index card with their name on it, a number listed, and color coded by program. This card serves two main functions. When the ceremony draws near, the numbers and program distinctions on each card will facilitate the formation of the lines that will be walked into the graduation hall. Additionally, the card will be presented by the graduate about to process across the stage to the NECB staff member atop the stairs. This staff member will deliver the card to the speaker at the podium so that the name of the graduate walking across the stage may be read correctly.

Graduates will not receive their Diplomas on stage as they process. Rather, diplomas will be mailed 6-8 weeks after the ceremony for any student who completed their academic requirements prior to June 1st, 2019. Graduates completing their program after this date will receive their diplomas shortly after the September conferral date.

While graduates wait for their diplomas to arrive, the NECB Registrar’s office can provide an official transcript (which notes a student’s graduation date and program completion) within a few days of request, should a student need documentation confirming their achievements before the diploma can be received.

Post-commencement reception

NECB will host a reception honoring all graduates and their families in the ballroom of the Back Bay Events Center immediately following the commencement ceremony itself. This will be a great opportunity to take pictures with friends and family, congratulate one another, and begin celebrating! There will be light refreshments served. The reception will run from the end of the commencement ceremony itself to 5:00 pm.

NECB respectfully requests that students limit the number of attendees to a maximum of six (6) people.

Family members and guests should expect to arrive between 1pm and 2pm. Please note that we will not be able to admit guests or family members prior to 1pm, we ask that you plan accordingly.

We will be Live-Streaming the Commencement Ceremony for those family members or guests who are unable to attend. The link for this is:
